October 19, 2009 There were some big shutouts this week, like Stephenson over M.L. King. Plus, a few undefeated teams went down and what seems like just about every other game went into overtime and was decided by one point.Games of the WeekStephenson 20, M.L. King 0Kentucky commit Raymond Sanders juked his way to two touchdowns in the Jaguars win over region foe M.L. King. The 5A match-up of unbeaten teams was televised on ESPNU. For a complete recap of the game, check out the related links or click HERE.Emanuel County Institute 32, Johnson County 31Emanuel County Institute knocked off the third-ranked team in Single-A. The win shows that Single-A is still as unpredictable as ever, but ECI is definitely a team to watch down the line. They seem to get stronger every week.Newnan 20, Westlake 0While the Jagurars of Stephenson beat the Lions 20-0, the Newnan Cougars were doing the same to the Westlake Lions. Defense is key to every Newnan win and this shutout is their fourth of the season.Peachtree Ridge 21, Collins Hill 7The Eagles were undefeated until they met the Lions. RB Charles Perkins' TD run before halftime was not enough to offset Peachtree Ridge's two early scores and 7 second half points.Apalachee 42, Loganville 41Loganville scored second in overtime and decided to go for two for the win. Unfortunately, the try was unsuccessful and Apalachee took a commanding region lead and clinched a playoff spot. This game was all about the running backs (see "Not So Surprising"),Scores from other Top GamesSwainsboro 19, Dublin 15Liberty County 22, Burke County 21 Lincoln County 10, Washington-Wilkes 7 Miller County 19, Seminole County 6 South Gwinnett 14, Parkview 10 Lassiter 56, Milton 32 Centennial 31, Walton 28 St. Pius 40, Washington 14 Sprayberry 13, Hillgrove 7 Statesboro 3, Ware County 0 Westminster 21, Decatur 0 Surprising:Hillgrove lost its first game of the season, going down in overtime to Sprayberry. As close as the game was in regulation, it was lopsided in overtime. Hillgrove could not do anything on offense in OT, going 4 and out, which was a fitting way to end this defensive battle. Not So Surprising:GAVarsity.com predicted that running backs Jon Lee and Storm Johnson would combine for over 500 yards on the ground and they came close. Lee got about 150 and Johnson got over 270 yards. The pair also combined for seven total touchdowns.Interesting fact:According to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association, Cross Keys' 55-0 loss to Blessed Trinity was their closest point margin in over a month. The Indians have lost by 56, 68, 65, and now 55 points in consecutive weeks. |
