It was a wild second round in the Georgia high school state playoffs. Top teams all over the state were pushed to the brink of defeat. Most of them were lucky enough to pull out a W, but 4A's top-ranked team was not nearly as lucky. Southwest DeKalb went down to Clarke Central thanks to a big interception by Derrick Smalls. Southwest DeKalb's stud running back Ken Malcome missed much of the game with a shoulder injury. The Athens Banner Herald has more on the game here.

Another stellar team, Stephenson, also lost. It was Region 1-5A knocking the talent-laden Jaguars out of the playoffs again; this time, it was semi-new head coach Rush Propst and Colquitt County. The South Georgia team went up to DeKalb County and are on their way back to South Georgia as the 22-21 victors. Click here to see a photo gallery of the game, courtesy of the AJC.

In a battle of traditional powers, Camden County and Lowndes, the Wildcats came out on top. Both teams had recently won state championships and both had only lost one game to Georgia 5A teams (Grayson and Northside-Warner Robins respectively), but Camden County's defense had the slight edge. The Wildcats took it 10-7. Don Coble of the Florida Times-Union has the full game recap here.

Peachtree Ridge beat Brookwood, Wesleyan and Apalachee both needed overtime to pull their games out, and Sandy Creek took out the defending 4A champion Tucker Tigers. Various authors from the AJC have that and more here.

Lassiter quarterback Hutson Mason put up 8 touchdowns against South Gwinnett (seriously). The Trojans advance to take on Colquitt County after their 70-49 win. That is 17 total touchdowns in that game. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Chip Saye has more on that here.

Roswell has had one of the state's top offenses this year. Grayson has had one of the top defenses. Grayson's defense won. The AJC's Jeff Haws has more on that here.

Newnan and Grayson have the best defenses in the state. Now, they play each other. Newnan defeated M.L. King 15-6. Click here to read what Glennis Curry of the AJC wrote on it.

Manny Fils of the Rockdale Citizen writes about Eastside's surprising 20-13 win over Carrollton. Check that out here.

Baldwin was one of 3A's top teams with several quality wins. Cairo did not really care about any of that, apparently, because the Syrupmakers took care of business, beating Baldwin 9-7.

Plus, Hiram went down, Westside-Macon dropped a ton of points on a usually stingy Lakeside-Evans defense, North Gwinnett got a shutout, Northside-Warner Robins knocked off Union Grove, ECI lost, Gainesville walked, and Greenville was no match for Wilcox County. Check out all of those scores and more here.

Stay tuned for GAVarsity.com's full game recap of the Buford-Jefferson game, which saw kind of an unusual finish.
