Tift County kicker likes the Terps

One of the most impressive kickers in 2005 was Tift County's
href="http://gavarsity.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=47633">Charlie Edwards. Edwards booted 18 field goals in 24 attempts with 50 yards being his longest. In fact, he was only one field goal shy from breaking the Georgia single season record of 19. A 1st team all-region and all state as a junior, Edwards also punted the ball 49 times for a 40 yard average.

GAVarsity.com talked to Edwards about his trip to College Park (MD) and his early favorite.
"I went to a tryout at Maryland," said Edwards. "I had a kicking session up there. I met with coach
href="http://gavarsity.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Year=2006&Sport=1&Team=40">Ralph Friedgen for about an hour and they showed me around the campus for a couple of hours. They seemed to be pretty interested in me. Coach Friedgen said he wouldn't know if they were going to sign a kicker until the middle of August. I could be a preferred walk-on. They said they would definitely be keeping an eye on me."
Edwards had already attended a three-day kicking camp in Athens. He kicked field goals, punted and kicked off for the Dawgs' special teams coach.
He also kicked in front of
href="http://gavarsity.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Year=2006&Sport=1&Coach=279">Urban Meyer at the swamp. The Gators showed interest in Edwards along with two other kickers. The Gators are uncertain about whether or not they'll be able to sign a kicker at this point as well.
Edwards likes three schools, but one stands out above the others.
"I'm really interested in Maryland," said Edwards. "Georgia and Florida are close to home and that would be nice, but I'm very interested in Maryland right now."
Georgia Southern has also contacted Edwards. He had planned to be at their camp this weekend, but he will not be able to make the trip to Statesboro.
"I'm not planning on any more summer camps," he said. "I would like to get up to Maryland to see a couple of games this year. Georgia has also invited me to their games for some unofficial visits. Florida had me down for the Vanderbilt and Florida State games last season. I'll probably go to a couple of their games as well."
Edwards is a three-year starter for the Blue Devils.
